Since starting our journey with laser treatments last year, we’ve recognised that as effective as they are, they can often be uncomfortable for the patient due to the heat generated by the laser. This is where cryo-cooling steps in, offering a cutting-edge solution to improve patient comfort and overall effectiveness of laser treatments.
What is Cryo Cooling?
Cryo cooling refers to the application of extremely cold air or gases to cool the skin during or after laser procedures. It can significantly reduce pain, discomfort and the risk of thermal damage associated with laser treatments.
By lowering the skin temperature, cryo cooling helps protect the outer layers of skin while allowing the laser to effectively target deeper tissues. The process involves the use of a controlled air-cooling device, providing a blast of cool air to the affected area before, during or after the treatment, making it safer, quicker and more tolerable for patients.
How does it work?
During treatment, the skin’s surface is exposed to concentrated beams of light, which convert to heat. The heat can cause discomfort and potential burning sensations, especially for patients with sensitive skin or during high-intensity treatments like laser hair removal or tattoo removal.
It works by:
· Reducing skin temperatures – the skin’s temperature is quickly reduced and the cooling creates a protective barrier, preventing overheating.
· Enhancing patient comfort – particularly useful in laser treatments that target larger areas of the body or in more sensitive areas.
· Preventing thermal damage – Excess heat during laser treatments can result in burns, scarring or prolonged downtime. Cryo cooling reduces the risk of such complications.
· Shortening recovery time – Patients often experience less redness, swelling and irritation after this procedure, leading to a quicker recovery time.
Our new cryo cooler uses controlled cold air, blown onto the treatment area continuously during or after treatment, making it popular for a range of treatments including hair removal and skin resurfacing.
We will be using cryo cooling for all laser treatments, including:
· C02 laser
· Fractional resurfacing
· Tattoo removal
· Hair removal
· IPL
It will be a game changer in our clinic, enhancing our patient comfort and safety whilst improving treatment outcomes. As laser technology advances, we expect that cryo cooling will remain a critical tool in delivering faster, safer and more effective results for our patients.
